Green Disposal Guide

How Can I Dispose of?

Appliances

The waste hauler (ARC Disposal), at no extra cost, collects refrigerators, freezers, washers, & dryers. Doors must be removed. Place the appliance curbside by 6:00 am on the same day as refuse collection. Please limit to 2 items.

Batteries

Automobile: Residents ONLY may bring automobile batteries to Public Works, 1111 Joseph Schwab Road, M-F, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. No cost. Limit 2.

Household: Residents ONLY may bring household batteries to Public Works, 1111 Joseph Schwab Road, M-F, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Unlimited, no cost. We accept nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium ion, and small sealed lead batteries. Alkaline batteries may be disposed as regular refuse.

Bulk

The following items are allowed for curbside collection: carpet rolls (4 foot lengths and tied), mattresses/box spring, couches, lawn care equipment (fluids must be removed), disassembled swing sets (no longer than 5 foot lengths), BBQ grills, microwaves, plumbing fixtures, televisions, snow blowers, shovels, toys, bicycles, water softeners, and empty water heaters. Please place items out by 6:00 am on the same day as refuse collection. All other bulk items may require a charge to the resident.

Computers

Maine Scrap Metals, 1274 Rand Road, Des Plaines. 847-824-3175. Small charge.

Construction (1 cubic yard limit)

Construction debris from small do-it-yourself projects by homeowner only must be placed in the garbage cart. Debris must be Construction, prepared in a way that allows the lid of the cart to close. Wood or other boards must be cut to a size allowing the lid to close.

Materials that cannot be placed into carts is limited to one cubic yard and must follow these requirements: Bundles (i.e. wood) must not exceed 4 ft in length nor 50 lbs in weight. Bundles must be placed at the curbside next to wheeled carts. Doors count as one bundle of construction debris. Nails must be removed from all boards. Hauler is not responsible to collect concrete, brick or asphalt.

Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Residents ONLY may bring fluorescent light bulbs to Public Works, 1111 Joseph Schwab Road, M-F, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. No cost. Limit 4.

Motor Oil

Oil Express, 1340 Lee Street, Des Plaines. 847-296-7059. Accepts motor oil and oil filters. No charge.

Paint (Latex paint only)

Open latex paint can(s) in a well-ventilated area and allow the paint to dry and harden completely (may take a few days). An absorbent such as kitty litter, sand, or shredded paper may be added to absorb the paint. Make sure the mixture is completely dry before disposing the latex paint can in the garbage container.

Tires (No Rims)

Residents ONLY may bring tires (no rims) to Public Works, 1111 Joseph Schwab Road, M-F, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. No cost. Limit.
