Special Events:
July 4th Celebration
Thousands took part in Des Plaines July 4th activities sponsored
by the Special Events Commission. Commissioner Carol Shannon
coordinated the events. A parade kicking off at 10:00 am from Oakton
and Wicke Street was the start of the holiday activities. An
old-fashioned Ice Cream Social immediately followed on the grounds
of the History Center’s Fisher Wright House, 815 Center St. Later
the grounds at Oakton Community College opened for picnicking and
fireworks at 4:00 pm. The fireworks extravaganza, presented by the
Mad Bomber, lasted approximately a half hour. The Special Events

coordinates several events during the year. This weekend the group
