The History Center's monthly Coffee Talk program will be held on
Thursday, May 8 from 1:30 -2:30 pm. This month's topic is the
history of BMW motorcycles presented by avid cyclist Dr. Mike Bagby.
Bagby has done several motorcycle tours and will display his
motorcycle, a 1996 BMW R850R and riding gear following the
presentation. Coffee Talks are held in the History Center's Visitor
Center, 781 Pearson Street, and are free of charge.
Beginning May 16 the Visitor Center will have a new exhibit in
the main exhibit gallery called "In Consequence of Being Sick:
Health Care in Des Plaines." A free opening reception, with
"healthy" refreshments, will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 pm on May 16.
The exhibit examines health care in Des Plaines from the time of
pioneer settlers to the present day. Learn about some of the
earliest doctors and how they helped sick patients, "quack"
medicine, see items from pharmacies in Des Plaines, "doctor
approved" potato chips and much more. The exhibit is free of charge
and is open during the museum's regular hours of operation.
The final Home-School program for the school year will be held on
Wednesday, May 21 from 10:00 - 11:00 am in the Visitor Center, 781
Pearson Street. The program is free of charge, but reservations are
required: 847-391-5399. This month, adults and children will work
together to make a sculpture from recyclable materials. The
sculpture will be displayed throughout the summer in the Visitor
Center. During the program, children will learn about recycling and
what is made from recycled materials.
