Mannheim-Higgins Tax Increment Financing District
(TIF #6)
The TIF #6 was established by the City of Des Plaines in 2001.
This TIF district is located in the triangle formed by Mannheim
Road, Higgins Road, and the Wisconsin Central rail line. The
City's role in the redevelopment effort includes land acquisition as
needed to facilitate redevelopment activity and public improvements
that are needed to upgrade the appearance and function of this prime
Des Plaines gateway. Public improvements are expected to
include streetscape improvements, construction of a new service road
to link property on either side of the Tollway, and construction of
a sound barrier along Greco Avenue. A new retail strip center
opened in early 2007 and features Starbuck's and Potbelly. The
City Council approved a hotel project totaling 350 rooms in 2007.
Those two hotels should be occupied in 2009.
