Frequently Asked Questions

If you have further questions, please contact the City of Des Plaines by using our online form.

Q: Why is Des Plaines called the "City of Destiny?"
A: The phrase "City of Destiny" was coined by Murray Smith, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, and Jack Hughes of Littelfuse, Inc., in the 1950s. O'Hare Field had just come into being and they envisioned major growth for Des Plaines. The phrase was used by the Chamber and became permanently associated with the City of Des Plaines.

Q: Where is City Hall located?
A: Des Plaines City Hall and Police Department are located at 1420 Miner Street/Northwest Highway in Des Plaines, between Graceland and Lee Street.

Q: When is City Hall open?
A: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Q: Who are the elected officials?
A: The Des Plaines City Council consists of eight aldermen and the Mayor. The aldermen represent eight specific wards and all elected officials (Mayor, Aldermen, City Clerk) serve four-year terms. You can get their contact information by clicking here.

Q: What is the contact information for vendors or those seeking employment with the casino to be built in Des Plaines.
A: The City of Des Plaines will play no role in the hiring process or the selection of vendors for the casino. The Midwest Gaming website at www.midwestgaming.com includes online forms for employment, vendor opportunities and a mailing list for news and updates about Midwest Gaming's casino to be built in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Q: What day is my garbage picked up?
A: Click here for more information about refuse and recycling.

Q: How can old television sets be disposed of?
A: Arc Disposal does accept TV's as part of their garbage collection.  TV's that can fit into the garbage carts should be placed in those carts.  Otherwise, they can be placed alongside carts on the residents' collection days.

Q: Do I need a permit for a garage sale?
A: Yes. The information on how to get a garage sale permit can be found in the Finance section of the website.

Q: How do I get a vehicle sticker?
A: Vehicle sticker forms are available in the Forms and Permits page of the website and information about vehicle stickers including cost can be found in the Finance section.

Q: How do I get the agenda or minutes for a City Council Meeting?
A: All agendas and minutes for meetings can be found here in the Reference Desk section.  Click here to view the archive of Agendas and Minutes.

Q: How do I get cable service?
A: There are two cable providers for the City of Des Plaines. You can receive cable from either Comcast (888-824-2273) or WideOpenWest (866-496-9669).

Q. Where do I find information on the City of Des Plaines' Capital Improvement Project?
A. Click here for more information about current CIP projects.

Q: How do I submit community announcement items to be posted on the community sign (at Miner and River) and for the bulletin board on the cable channel 17?
A: Requests for the community sign (at Miner and River) can be submitted here.  Requests for the Cable TV channel 17 bulletin board can be submitted here.  Please take the time to read the Bulletin Board Policy. Be sure to submit 8 weeks prior to the dates you would like your message to appear.  Note:  A request for usage of the sign does not guarantee your message will appear on the sign.  Events with the widest community appeal will receive priority.  Due to the amount of requests received, you will not receive follow-up (phone or mail) on the status of your request.

Q: How do I use the “Opt-In” feature for the Community Notification System.
A: The Opt-In feature for the Community Notification System is now available. Please click here for more information.
