Des Plaines Mayor Tony Arredia announced the
volunteer nominees and winners at the Super Star Awards Dinner.
A Committee of Special Events Commissioners consisting of Gayle
Mountcastle, Linda Forman (Chairman of the Special Events
Commission), Carol Shannon and Mary Klabacha coordinated the
evening and conducted the award presentations. John Burke,
President of the Des Plaines Historical Society was the Guest
Speaker. Representatives of various not-for-profit
organizations, the local park districts and school districts
attended.
Music at the dinner was provided by Maine West
High School Students Elisabeth Jacobsen, violin, Maggie
Gronkowska, violin, Emilie Sinkler, viola, and Alyssa Laessig,
cello, under the direction of Orchestra Director Tobin Langridge.
Flowers for the Super Star event were provided
by Pesche’s Flower Shop, Gifts and Greenhouses, Inc. Rebel’s
Trophies, Inc. supplied the trophies. Special thanks was
extended to the Des Plaines Times and the Des Plaines Journal &
Topics Newspapers for publishing the nomination application
forms.
Special thanks were extended to Mr. Gene
Haring of the Des Plaines Park District who served as the
evening’s photographer.
Nomination forms were solicited from the
community for the award categories. The nominees were evaluated
by a group of anonymous judges, with winners announced for the
first time Thursday night at the Super Star Celebration.
"We are extremely proud of all our Des Plaines
Super Stars. Des Plaines is truly fortunate to have such a
wonderful pool of volunteers involved in all walks of life," Des
Plaines Special Events Commissioner Gayle Mountcastle said.

Over two hundred people joined the members of the Des Plaines
Special Events Commission at the Des Plaines Super Star Volunteer
Awards Dinner, April 26, 2007, at Casa Royale, 783 Lee St., to honor
local volunteers for their dedication and service to their
community.
The following list indicates the nominees in the various
categories with the winners designated with an asterick*.

Arredia’s address at the Super Star Awards Ceremony]:
Business Leader Super Star
In recognition of a business that shows support for the community
through volunteer efforts or monetary contributions.
Comfort Inn – Nick Trivedi
*ITW Fastex - Located at 195 Algonquin Road, ITW Fastex has
donated both time and financial support to various organizations
including Wings, the Northwest Suburban Day Care Center, the United
Way, the Self-Help Closet & Food Pantry and the Healthy Community
Partnership Foundation.

Family Super Star
A family will be honored whose efforts have brought outstanding
family values to the City of Des Plaines.
*Dorothy & William Grice – This longtime Des Plaines couple has
given countless volunteer hours to Central School PTA, the Boy
Scouts, the Des Plaines Historical Society and Lutheran General
Hospital.

Young Super Star
In recognition of a citizen of Des Plaines, ages 12-18, who has
volunteered his or her time and talents to benefit others.

*Caitlin & Amberly Glitz – These sisters have been students of
the Willows Academy and have served on the Student Council since 6th
Grade. They have initiated the Color Guard at school and organized a
collection drive for wounded American soldiers.
The Senior Super Star
An individual or group, 55 years of age or older, will be
recognized for volunteering to help mature citizens experience
quality activities.
*Donald Gloor – A Des Plaines volunteers for over 40 years, Don
Gloor has given generously to his neighbors assisting with shoveling
snow, cutting grass and trimming trees. Showing the same devotion to
the community, he has volunteered numerous hours to scouting, the
Des Plaines Community Senior Center, and the Des Plaines Arts
Council.

Beautify Des Plaines Super Star
A group will be recognized for making a difference in the
beautification efforts of the community.
*The Des Plaines Garden Club – For over 75 years the Des Plaines
Garden Club has been preserving Des Plaines’ natural beauty. Their
projects include coordinating the "Let Freedom Ring Memorial
Garden," "The Patriotic Tree," and the "Blue Star Memorial Tribute,"
honoring the country’s servicemen and women.
Good Neighbor Super Star
A neighbor who has been helpful and given to people around them.

*Martin Voss – Currently the Commander of the American Legion
Post #36, Martin Voss serves as the Junior Vice Commander of the
American Legion’s 9th District. He serves as volunteers for several
organizations, which include Wings, the American Cancer Society’s
Relay For Life and Bessie’s Table. He has volunteered numerous hours
serving food to the homeless and providing assistance and recreation
at the veterans’ hospital.

Educator Super Star
This individual will be chosen based on the positive affect they
have had based on their volunteer efforts outside the classroom
Norine Murphy
*Victor Rodriguez – Victor Rodriguez currently serves as a Social
Studies Teacher at Maine West High School working with the Hispanic
Club, the Mock Trial Team and several youth oriented committees.
Youth Group Super Star
This youth group has had a positive affect on the community by
giving of their time and talent, or through monetary contributions
for a good cause.

Des Plaines Public Library Teen Advisory Board

*Des Plaines Public Library Teen Advisory Board – Encouraging
teen programming at the Library, the Des Plaines Public Library Teen
Advisory Board has consistently been involved with the summer
reading club, book discussions, the annual "Do the Dewey," and the
American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life," to mention a few.

*Dennison Love – Dennison Love is the President of the Mobile
Aviation Historical Exhibits, a not for profit organization devoted
to promoting and maintaining the history of aviation. He has worked
with local scout groups to achieve "Aerospace Education Merit
Badges, has taught at Oakton Community College Kid’s College Program
and has coordinated several aviation related exhibits.
Fine Arts Super Star
Recognition will be given to an individual who has contributed
significantly to the cultural life of the community either through
music, art, literature, or other form of artistic endeavor.
Kathy Bloom
*Paul Lindblad – Founder of a children’s choir, Lindblad has
collaborated with several area musical organizations over the year’s
including the Science & Arts Academy, Immanuel Lutheran School and
the Bog Theater. As a piano teacher, his students continue to
receive top ratings from the National Guild of Piano Teachers.

*Thomas Christiansen (INDIVIDUAL AWARD WINNER) – Alderman of the
second Ward in Des Plaines, Tom Christiansen has volunteered
numerous hours participating in the Police Department’s Youth Clubs,
the Salvation Army, Sisterfest, the Taste of Des Plaines and July
4th Activities.

*Des Plaines Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2992 (GROUP AWARD
WINNER) – The Des Plaines Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2992 have
received "Governor Hometown Awards" in 2005 and 2006. They have
annually coordinated memorial and ceremonies at the Lake Park
Pavilion, have volunteered at the Monday Night Community Dinners and
have hosted the "Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program." They
continue to collect, package and send items to the men and women
serving in the armed forces.
