2008 Press Release: Free Emergency 911 Cell Phones For Des Plaines Seniors

For immediate release
March 4, 2008

The City of Des Plaines and Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart invite all Des Plaines senior citizens, to register and receive a free Emergency 9-1-1 Cell Phone at 10:00 am, Monday, April 28, 2008. Reservations are required to attend the cell phone distribution event at the Des Plaines City Hall, 1420 Miner Street in Des Plaines.

The Cell Phones for Seniors Program provides a free 9-1-1 emergency digital cellular telephone to county residents over the age of 65, who DO NOT have a cellular phone. Having a digital cell phone that can reach emergency services offers seniors an extra measure of security as they are driving, taking public transportation or participating in outdoor activities.

In addition to the phone, each senior attending the April 28, 2008 event will receive two batteries, a charger and instructions on how to access 9-1-1 services on their cell phone.

Des Plaines residents who would like to donate their old and unwanted digital/analog cell phones to the Sheriff’s Cell Phones for Seniors Program can drop them off at the following Des Plaines locations:

  • Des Plaines City Hall-1420 Miner Street
  • Des Plaines Frisbie Senior Center- 52 West Northwest Highway
  • Des Plaines Park District-Prairie Lakes – 515 East Dempster/Thacker
  • Des Plaines Public Library - 1501 Ellinwood
  • Any brand, make or model of cellular phones will be accepted, whether it is in working order or not. Even components of cellular telephones will be accepted.

Please call the City of Des Plaines Health and Human Services Division at 847-391-5480 to register to attend this one-day event. For more information on the Cook County Sheriff’s Cell Phones for Seniors Program, please call Sheriff Dart’s Office at 773-869-7878.
