2008 Press Release: Lt. Governor Quinn Visits Green Conference At
OCC

Officials from the City of Des Plaines and Oakton Community
College are pleased to announce that Illinois Lieutenant Governor
Pat Quinn will join speakers from local government and the corporate
environment at the Green Business Conference and Luncheon, 12:00 –
3:00 pm, Friday, March 28, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf
Road, Des Plaines. Registration, which is $35 and
includes lunch, presentations, and handouts, is limited and may be
made by calling 847-635-1934.
Lieutenant Governor Quinn, a leading environmental proponent,
heads up the State of Illinois’ efforts to promote environmentally
responsible practices by businesses, colleges and universities, and
municipalities. He joins Des Plaines Mayor Tony Arredia and 6th Ward
Alderman Mark Walsten in discussing how businesses can work with
state and local government and private industry to improve the
region’s environmental efficiency. Demonstrating its commitment to
this issue, the City of Des Plaines has authorized signing onto the
Metropolitan Mayors Caucus’ Greenest Region Compact and will observe
the World Wildlife Fund’s "Earth Hour" on March 29, 2008 by turning
out the lights in municipal buildings from 7:00 – 8:00 pm. Des
Plaines City Officials are also encouraging local businesses and
residents to acknowledge Earth Hour.
Corporate speakers for the March 28 conference include
environmental leaders such as Candice Alley, Program Coordinator,
Global Initiatives, HSBC – North America, who will address the
advantages of leadership in energy and environmental
design (LEED) standards and how building professionals can become
LEED accredited; and Debbie C. Hammond, Director of Global
Environmental Health and Safety Governance for Abbott International,
who will discuss steps the corporation has taken to reduce its
environmental footprint in various aspects of its operations.
In addition, two panels of experts from business, government, and
education will discuss practical, cost-effective ways to conserve
resources and reduce waste and pollution. Participants include
representatives from Oakton Community College, the Illinois
Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), and Delta Institute, along
with green businesses Horigan Urban Forest Products, EA Logistics,
Onyx Environmental Solutions and Steiner Electric.
In addition to the City of Des Plaines, sponsors include Oakton
Community College, Harper College, DEEP GREEN (Des Plaines Energy
and Environmental Program), and Des Plaines-based Green 2B/Green2C
Marketing.
