2008 Press Release: Clinical Government Program To Begin At City
Hall
For immediate release
June 4, 2008
Beginning Tuesday, June 10, 2008, twenty-four Maine West High
School students will be attending class at Des Plaines City Hall
followed by a two-hour work session in individual City Departments.
It’s all part of the annual summer Clinical Government Program,
allowing students to fulfill a half credit government course
requirement.
Under the direction of Maine West Social Science Instructor Owen
Doak, the Program is designed to expose students to local government
by providing them with hands-on experience. In addition to attending
workstations and/or touring City Departments such as Engineering,
Public Works, Fire, Police, and the 9-1-1 Communications Center,
students are required to attend a City Council Meeting. They also
visit the Des Plaines Park District, the Cook County Courts, the
Center of Concern, the Grove (Glenview Park District), the Solid
Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC), the Self Help Closet
and Food Pantry, the Library, Maine Township Hall, the Maine
Township Food Pantry, and the Des Plaines History Center. Students
will also work with Rainbow Hospice and will visit Lee Manor Health
Care and Asbury Court Retirement Community. City officials,
department heads and department representatives address the students
during their two-hour classroom session. Amongst those included as
speakers are Mayor Tony Arredia, City Clerk Donna McAllister, City
Manager Jason Bajor, Deputy Fire Chief Ron Eilken, Assistant
Director of Engineering Jon Duddles, City Attorney David Wiltse,
Police Officer Tara Goble, Director of Community & Economic
Development Mike Conlan, and Susan Golland of the History Center.
This year the Clinical Government participants include: Marissa
Bowman, Joseph Brezezinski, Amanda Cipriani, Josef DeLeon, Gabriella
Divietro, Ann Dore, Julie Dusckett, Dean Economos, Sue Flores,
Thomas Heffernan, Kathryn Hope, Rebecca Jakocko, Arrianna Jarosz,
Brendan Joyce, Alyssa Laessig, Kevin Lass, Kevin Norman, Janki
Patel, Allison Pietrusiewicz, Patrick Potter, Michael Prokopiak,
Vanessa Vasquez, Debbie Wong, Nestor Zavala.
The three-week program concludes Thursday, June 26, 2008 with a
Press Conference in the City Council Chambers allowing students to
questions City Officials.
