2010 Press Release: Mayor Presents Check From 1st Lady's Lunch To Father Smyth

For immediate release
February 3, 2010

Des Plaines Mayor Martin J. Moylan recently presented a check for $12,000, representing the proceeds from the "1st Lady’s Lunch," to Reverend John P. Smyth, Executive Director of the Reverend John P. Smyth Standing Tall Charitable Foundation. The Standing Tall Foundation assists individuals who are categorized as lower socio-economic, underprivileged or underrepresented with academic scholarships. Applicants come to the Foundation from school counselors, teachers and social workers. Many organizations, as well as individuals, contact the Foundation unsolicited. The Foundation provides educational scholarships for primary and secondary schools, colleges, universities, and/or vocational training. The 1st Lady’s Lunch, hosted by the Mayor’s wife, Lisa, was held at Manzo’s Banquets, 1574 Elmhurst Road, on October 4, 2009. Entertainment featured a presentation on "Chocolates" by Linda Hills, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, and "Tea" by Sheila Duda of Tea Lula. Musical entertainment was provided by the Off Broadway Ladies, Kathy Caminiti and Salley Daley. Father Smyth, who served four decades as the Executive Director of Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, was the honored guest at the luncheon. A committee consisting of Mayor Moylan, Mrs. Lisa Moylan, Secretary to the Mayor Donna Catlett, and Director of Media Services Karen Kozenczak worked on the coordination of the event.
