Mike Conlan came to the City of Des Plaines in
April of 2007 from Duluth, Minnesota’s third largest city, where
he served concurrently as the Director of Planning & Development
and Executive Director of the City’s Economic Development
Authority.
Conlan began his city planning career as a
planner with a regional development commis-sion, and served
Duluth as a neighborhood planner, Senior Planner, and division
Manager before becoming the Director of Planning & Development.
He has also served in the private sector as executive director
of a nonprofit agency, planning consultant and as President and
Chief Operating Officer of the downtown development corporation.
Conlan was educated at St. Olaf College and the
University of Minnesota, where he received a master’s degree in
community development. He is one of a handful of professionals
to receive national certification in both city planning and
economic development, and has served as a consultant on
sustainable development to the U.S. Agency for International
Development in Eastern Europe.
Mike Conlan has also dedicated many years to
community service, having served as a Trustee of Miller-Dwan
Hospital; as President of the boards of the Salvation Army,
Habitat for Humanity, the Lincoln Park Business Association and
the Downtown Loins Club; and as Director of the United Way, the
Metropolitan Interstate Commission, the Local Initiatives
Support Corporation, the SoftCenter International in Ronneby,
Sweden, the Lake Superior Marine Museum, the AIFA Urban Indian
Center, the Copeland Center and the TEAM Duluth Economic
Development Consortium. He also served many years as a
scoutmaster with the Lake Superior Council of the BSA and as a
Delegate to the Central Labor Body. |
