All vehicles registered in Des Plaines or garaged in the city are required to display a current Des Plaines vehicle sticker. This includes leased vehicles, company cars and vehicles registered to a Des Plaines address but housed in a college town. The City also licenses motorcycles. Vehicle stickers are renewed during the period of May 1 through June 30 of each year and must be displayed by July 1.  Vehicle stickers are valid from July 1 through June 30 of the following year.

Residents with information on file will receive a pre-printed form in the mail on or before May 1. If you do not receive a form by May 10, please call 847-391-5319 or stop by the City Hall for an application. Residents with pre-printed forms may mail their applications to the City's lockbox destination, use the City Hall drop box, various currency exchanges that sell stickers, or come in person to the City Hall, 1420 Miner Street, during normal business hours. Normal business hours for the City Hall are: Monday through Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Stickers are on sale throughout the year at the City Hall.  New residents and newly purchased car owners have 45 days to purchase and display stickers.  This is regardless of whether or not license plates have been received.

Transferring Stickers
Transfer stickers must be purchased when one vehicle is sold and another substituted for that vehicle.  Transfer/replacement stickers may be obtained by presenting scrapings of a present valid sticker.  Transfer to a vehicle in the same class is $5 and a transfer between classes is $5 plus the difference of scheduled fees, if any.

New Residents
New residents must purchase vehicle stickers within 45 days of moving into Des Plaines.  New residents with a current vehicle sticker from the municipality where they previously resided may apply for a Des Plaines vehicle sticker at the transfer fee rate of $5 as long as the valid sticker expires on the same day as the Des Plaines sticker, which is June 30.  There is an additional $2.50 per month charge for every month the sticker expires prior to the expiration of a Des Plaines sticker. Also, new residents should include a copy of their lease agreement or closing papers for proof & date of residency.

New Vehicles
Residents acquiring a new vehicle have 45 days to purchase a vehicle sticker.  Residents should include a copy of the sales or lease receipt/contract.
