Citizens on Patrol

The Citizens On Patrol are a trained group of volunteers who have completed the Des Plaines Police Department Citizens Police Academy. The Citizens On Patrol are a trained group of volunteers who have completed the Des Plaines Police Department Citizens Police Academy. Graduates are invited to apply for the program, undergo a thorough review process, and, if selected, complete additional training to become a member. These members then attend ongoing training, which includes police vehicle operation, radio use and protocol, and patrol tactics and perimeter patrol.

As members of the unit, these residents patrol the streets of Des Plaines, functioning as another set of eyes and ears for the police department. They perform non-emergency duties, which keep trained and sworn police officers on the street available to respond to calls of a more serious nature.

Sample duties include:

  • Pickup and delivery of prisoner meals
  • Traffic direction
  • Assistance with railroad gate malfunctions
  • Motorist assists
  • Vehicle lockouts
  • Selected enforcement of parking violations
  • Delivery of official city documents
  • Assistance at disaster scenes, special events, and city functions
  • For more information on the Citizens on Patrol contact Bruce Ahlmann at 847-391-5400, ext. 1481.
