Child Safety Seats
Children in Illinois are protected under the Illinois Vehicle
Code’s, Child Passenger Protection Act, 625 ILCS 25/4, which
requires all children 8 years old and younger to be transported in a
child restraint system. The Des Plaines Police Department
offers a free program where National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) certified technicians will install your child
safety seat properly, ensuring the safety of your children.
Child safety seat installations are available at the police
department every Wednesday from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm on a first come
first serve basis. If you cannot make it during this time
frame, contact Officer
Gitzinger or Officer
Johnson of the Community Action Team for an appointment at

under the age of 8 years in a non‑commercial motor vehicle of the
first division, a motor vehicle of the second division with a gross
vehicle weight rating of 9,000 pounds or less, or a recreational

person shall be responsible for providing for the protection of such
child by properly securing him or her in an appropriate child
restraint system. The parent or legal guardian of a child under the
age of 8 years shall provide a child restraint system to any person
who transports his or her child. Any person who transports the child
