Community Survey for Our Residents: We'd Like Your Feedback

The City of Des Plaines invites its residents to take a short survey about the challenges that low to moderate income households are currently experiencing. The goal is to use the City's annual allocation of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) in the most responsible and effective way. These funds help providing decent housing, a suitable living environment, and expanded economic opportunities throughout the community. The State of Illinois offers a robust, comprehensive website that offers the most accurate and current information, such as a map of COVID-19 cases by county, volunteer opportunities, number of persons tested versus number of cases confirmed to be positive, and more. COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT: City Hall is currently closed to the general public, limiting visitors to all of its facilities at this time. On March 15, 2020, Governor J.B. Pritzker issued an executive order requiring all restaurants and bars in the State of Illinois to close to dine-in customers. During the duration of the Governor’s order, only Drive-Through Service, Curbside Service, Delivery Service, and Pick-Up Service are allowed until Monday March 30, 2020.

Community Benefits to Participating in the 2020 Census

The Des Plaines Public Library has partnered with the City of Des Plaines, state and local government leaders, and other community partners to increase awareness about the 2020 Census and motivate residents to respond to the census questionnaire. Conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau every 10 years, an accurate census count directly affects federal funding allocations for Des Plaines schools, roads, fire departments and more. For the first time, the internet will be the primary response option. While a paper form will still be available, individuals will be able to complete the 2020 Census form online, by phone, or by mail. March 17th Primary Election News: Please Check Your Polling Place

Residents of Des Plaines are encouraged to take advantage of the early voting option for the March 17th Presidential Primary Election. The location for early voting is the Des Plaines Library through March 16th, 2020. Dates and times for early voting are available on the Cook County Clerk's website at cookcountyclerk.com/service/early-voting-locations.

Important Notice: Local voters in the following precincts/townships should note that some polling locations for the March 17th elections have changed:

  • Elk Grove 36 - Changed to Recplex, 420 W Dempster, Mount Prospect
  • Elk Grove 38 - Changed to Recplex, 420 W Dempster, Mount Prospect

Welcome 2020 - Looking Forward to Great Things

Last year was an incredibly busy year in Des Plaines. In 2019, the City experienced significant downtown streetscape improvements and, even more exciting, the purchase and renovation of the Des Plaines Theatre. The community saw a surge of development activity - from the completion of Ellison Apartments to a city block mixed-use project to its west. At the same time, the City created a new TIF District that includes the busy Lee and Oakton streets corridor and a proposed new Metra station. In 2020, we’re excited to ride the momentum we’ve worked to build over the past eight years and look forward to what the new year may bring.

Halloween Trick-or-Treating in Des Plaines

The City of Des Plaines does not have designated hours for trick-or-treating on Halloween. However, we encourage parents to be aware of the hazards that exist after sunset. If children are trick-or-treating at dusk or after dark, chemical glow sticks are a safe light source for trick-or-treaters to have with them, or attached to their costumes to enhance their visibility. Drivers should exercise due caution at all times, but special attention should be given when driving near schools, parks, and residential neighborhoods on Halloween.

City Observes Patriot Day on Wednesday, September 11, 2019

The public is invited to attend the City of Des Plaines observance honoring those who died in the September 11, 2001 attacks. The event will be held at City Hall, 1420 Miner Street beginning at 8:00 AM. Opening remarks and introductions will be followed by the traditional "Ringing of the Bell" ceremony, a police Honor Guard rifle salute, and closing remarks. Vehicle Sticker Sales Begin May 1, 2019

The City's annual Vehicle Sticker sales begin May 1st, 2019 (PLEASE NOTE: Residents are no longer required to purchase Pet Licenses). We've made it easy to renew your vehicle stickers from the convenience of your home or work computer. Just visit us online at desplaines.org/RenewOnline to get started!

Des Plaines residents can also renew their stickers via USPS Mail or In-Person at City Hall, 1420 Miner Street. If you purchased a vehicle sticker in 2018 and do not receive a renewal form by May 16th, 2019, please call 847.827.4327, or visit the cashier’s counter at City Hall for an application.

Union Pacific Railroad Upgrades and River Road Construction Announced

April 2, 2019 

The Des Plaines Public Works and Engineering Department has announced that River Road will be closed due to the reconstruction of the roadway and Union Pacific Railroad (Miner Street) crossing upgrades starting Tuesday, April 9, 2019. The project will result in the full reconstruction of the roadway, improvements to railroad crossing gates and signals, and replacement of underground utilities. A detour map is available, with the project is expected to be completed by mid-July, weather permitting. For the most current project updates, visit desplaines.org/Construction on the City's website. Lane Closures at Cumberland Circle in Des Plaines

March 12, 2019 

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that as part of the reconstruction of the existing Cumberland Circle (Golf Road and Wolf Road North), IDOT will be initiating lane closures beginning on Monday, March 18th (weather permitting). Republic Services Announces Further Delays for Residential Curbside Pick-Up

January 30, 2019 

Republic Services, the City’s contracted waste disposal service provider, has announced they need to continue its suspension of curbside trash pick-up services through tomorrow, Thursday, January 31st. Although the current weather conditions and life-threatening temperatures have temporarily halted the company’s service operations, Republic Services will fulfill its weekly commitment to Des Plaines residents by completing all residential curbside refuse services by this Saturday.

Please note, this week’s services include trash pick-up only. Recycle services have been suspended for the remainder of the week. Des Plaines residents currently serviced by Republic Services are asked to adjust their calendars to the following temporary service schedule:

  • Residents typically scheduled for Wednesdays will be serviced this Friday, February 1st
  • Residents typically scheduled for Thursdays will also be serviced this Friday, February 1st
  • Residents typically scheduled for Fridays will be serviced this Saturday, February 2nd

*Recycle and trash pick-up services will resume as scheduled beginning Monday, February 4th.
