Vehicle Sticker Sales Begin May 1, 2019

May 1, 2019 

The City's annual Vehicle Sticker sales begin May 1st, 2019 (PLEASE NOTE: Residents are no longer required to purchase Pet Licenses). We've made it easy to renew your vehicle stickers from the convenience of your home or work computer. Just visit us online at desplaines.org/RenewOnline to get started!

Des Plaines residents can also renew their stickers via USPS Mail or In-Person at City Hall, 1420 Miner Street. If you purchased a vehicle sticker in 2018 and do not receive a renewal form by May 16th, 2019, please call 847.827.4327, or visit the cashier’s counter at City Hall for an application.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day: April 27th

Save-the-Date for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 27th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Des Plaines Police Department encourages the public to drop-off old, or unwanted prescription drugs at its 24/7 collection site located in the Department's lobby at 1418 Miner Street. During last October’s National Take Back Day, collection boxes were put to good use. In one day alone, over 457 TONS of unused and expired medicines were dropped off for safe and proper disposal in the US. Union Pacific Railroad Upgrades and River Road Construction Announced

April 2, 2019 

The Des Plaines Public Works and Engineering Department has announced that River Road will be closed due to the reconstruction of the roadway and Union Pacific Railroad (Miner Street) crossing upgrades starting Tuesday, April 9, 2019. The project will result in the full reconstruction of the roadway, improvements to railroad crossing gates and signals, and replacement of underground utilities. A detour map is available, with the project is expected to be completed by mid-July, weather permitting. For the most current project updates, visit desplaines.org/Construction on the City's website. Lane Closures at Cumberland Circle in Des Plaines

March 12, 2019 

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced that as part of the reconstruction of the existing Cumberland Circle (Golf Road and Wolf Road North), IDOT will be initiating lane closures beginning on Monday, March 18th (weather permitting). Commuters can expect full closures of access from Golf Road to Wolf Road North and State Street and the reduction of Golf Road to one lane in each direction. Click here to view IDOT's press release.

Early voting for the April 2nd Consolidated Election is available at the Des Plaines Library seven days a week from March 18th to April 1st. Residents of Ward 2, Ward 4, Ward 6, and Ward 8 will have the opportunity to vote for one individual to represent their ward for the next four years. Republic Services Announces Further Delays for Residential Curbside Pick-Up

January 30, 2019 

Republic Services, the City’s contracted waste disposal service provider, has announced they need to continue its suspension of curbside trash pick-up services through tomorrow, Thursday, January 31st. Although the current weather conditions and life-threatening temperatures have temporarily halted the company’s service operations, Republic Services will fulfill its weekly commitment to Des Plaines residents by completing all residential curbside refuse services by this Saturday.

Please note, this week’s services include trash pick-up only. Recycle services have been suspended for the remainder of the week. Des Plaines residents currently serviced by Republic Services are asked to adjust their calendars to the following temporary service schedule:

  • Residents typically scheduled for Wednesdays will be serviced this Friday, February 1st
  • Residents typically scheduled for Thursdays will also be serviced this Friday, February 1st
  • Residents typically scheduled for Fridays will be serviced this Saturday, February 2nd

*Recycle and trash pick-up services will resume as scheduled beginning Monday, February 4th.

Winter Snow Removal and Salting Operations are a Priority

Winter is officially here, and the Des Plaines Public Works Department is working hard to keep public roadways accessible for vehicles and pedestrians. Snow plowing and salt operations are always made easier with the cooperation and patience of our community members. When shoveling, please place snow on parkways, leaving the street free for plow trucks. Halloween Trick-or-Treating in Des Plaines

October 15, 2018 

The City of Des Plaines does not have designated hours for trick-or-treating on Halloween. However, we encourage parents to be aware of the hazards that exist after sunset. If children are trick-or-treating at dusk or after dark, chemical glow sticks are a safe light source for trick-or-treaters to have with them, or attached to their costumes to enhance their visibility. Drivers should exercise due caution at all times, but special attention should be given when driving near schools, parks, and residential neighborhoods on Halloween.

Information About Summer Watering Restrictions

The City is committed to protecting one of the most precious resources we have, drinking water. To that end, it is imperative that we continue to conserve water when possible. The City has an even-odd address watering restriction in effect from May 15 through September 15 every year.

Hours for watering are from 5:00 am to 8:00 am and 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Even numbered addresses may water on even numbered calendar days; odd number addresses may water on odd numbered calendar days.

PLEASE NOTE: Restrictions may be waived for new plantings that require more watering after initial installation (such as sod, trees, and bushes). Please contact the Public Works Department at 847.391.5464 for more information.

Keeping Snow Plow Routes Clear During Winter Storms

The Illinois Department of Transportation is warning the public that a major winter storm with the potential for 12 inches of snow in northern Illinois will create treacherous conditions beginning tonight, February 8th. With the expectation of snow and ice-covered roads, the City of Des Plaines reminds its citizens to not park vehicles on designated snow routes until all snow removal operations have been completed. Republic Services Cancels Des Plaines Garbage Pick-Up for Friday, February 9th

Due to the upcoming storm warning, Republic Services’ Mount Prospect Unit has cancelled tomorrow’s garbage pick-up operations for all Des Plaines customers. The announcement will delay the Friday, February 9, 2018 collection service by one day to Saturday, February 10, 2018. Customers should refrain from putting garbage carts out until Friday night or early Saturday morning. Republic Services thanks its customers for their patience and understanding. Special Garbage Pick-up to Assist Residents with Clean-Up

In an effort to assist residents with storm clean-up, residents can place water damaged household items at the curb for disposal on their regular garbage day. PLEASE NOTE: Only flood damaged items will be accepted as part of this special pick-up service.

Free “Friends & Family CPR” Training for Des Plaines Residents

The Des Plaines Fire Department is once again providing two offerings of a free Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) class to Des Plaines residents. The first is on Saturday, April 15th from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and the second is on Tuesday, April 18th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Both are at Fire Station #61, located at 405 S. River Rd.
Interested residents may call 847-391-5345 during business hours to register for the classes. There is a $20 registration fee, which will be fully refunded at the class.

2017 Early Voting at Des Plaines Public Library

Early voting for the 2017 Consolidated General Election is offered at the Des Plaines Public Library, located at 1501 Ellinwood, from Monday, March 20 to Monday, April 3 (no early voting on Sundays). Registration Open for the 2017 Des Plaines Citizens Police Academy!

The Des Plaines Police Department’s Community Action Team invites the public to sign up for its 2017 Citizens Police Academy. The popular 10-week Academy begins March 21st, 2017 and concludes on May 23rd, 2017. The program introduces hands-on exercises, including forensics, S.W.A.T., and traffic stops, to help simulate the everyday life of a law enforcement officer.
